Diaphragm

How it works:

A diaphragm is a flexible plastic cup that you fill with spermicide and place in your vagina and over your cervix before having sex. This prevents you from getting pregnant by keeping the sperm from getting to the egg. For most people, the diaphragm is about 88% effective at preventing pregnancy.

Perks:

  • Hormone free

  • Reusable

  • Can stop using it on your own

Drawbacks:

  • Not as effective as other birth control methods

  • Must use every time you have sex

  • Doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
