How it works:

The withdrawal method or “pulling out,” relies on the penis being removed from the vagina and moved away from the vulva before ejaculation. This prevents you from getting pregnant by keeping the sperm from getting to the egg. For most people, withdrawl is about 78% effective at preventing pregnancy.

Perks:

  • Can stop using it on your own

Drawbacks:

  • Partner controls the method

  • Not as effective as other birth control methods

  • Must use every time you have sex

  • Doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
